In the spirit of community and compassion, the Strath Neighbourhood Centre continues to be a beacon of support in Strathalbyn – a place built from local determination and sustained through the goodwill of its volunteers.
Born from what organisers fondly describe as the “dark ages of community development,” the centre was established after many meetings and consultations.
Its mission remains simple yet powerful, to support the community by offering both a hand up to those in need and the hand of fellowship for those experiencing loneliness and isolation.
The centre’s range of programs and activities are made possible thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers, including local resident Judy Eldred, who brings warmth and connection to her role as receptionist.
Ms Eldred, who has lived in Strathalbyn for 32 years, recently retired from her retail position in Murray Bridge and wanted to give back to her community in a meaningful way.
“I get a sense of purpose doing something to help others,” she said.
“It is fun volunteering here, and they are very accommodating and understanding if I am unable to come in on my regular day.”
She said the application process to join the team was simple, and that she felt supported from the start.
“Even though I didn’t need a lot of training due to my prior experience, I was still provided with a comprehensive induction and given plenty of assistance in any areas I wasn’t familiar with,” she said.
“Volunteers are important in the community as it helps to keep people connected.”
